Mr. Verge…
Posted by Shaun McNicholas in Family and Friends, Fine Arts, Illustration, Life Lessons on August 9, 2010
You never know how much of an impact you are having on the world you live in. Live a quiet peaceful life and although everything doesn’t work out as well as you would like for it to work out, you have an amazing impact on the people who’s lives you touch. I’ve not in my short life so far been impacted as much by this reality as I have been this past year. After losing my job in Chicago I moved back close to my home town in Tampa, Florida, and in the move I’ve re-connected with many friends and family who have impacted my life profoundly over the years.
Most of the people who have had the largest impact in my life have done so in similar ways as my art teacher from high-school. He was a completely different kind of “teacher” than any I had experienced before. He had a formal lesson plan for the year, every year, but when a student in his class showed some level of both talent and desire to learn, instead of making us conform to the lesson plan he laid out for the year he allowed us to develop our own plan of action with some mutual advice from him and his experience in working with the educational system. Especially in 11th and 12th grades while we were preparing to go off to college and develop some form of a career. Instead of forcing us to succumb to tests and evaluations he allowed us to find what our talents would uncover by the natural progression of being surrounded by artistic inspiration and competition.
Competition was a key for me, I loved to win. I wasn’t much of a person in the athletic arena, I weighed only 110lbs from 9th grade until I was about 26 years old. But put a piece of paper in front of me, or a piece of chalk, or even a pencil and a napkin, and I will demand the attention of everyone around me by creating something out of nothing. I have always loved to do that. It actually began all the way back in 5th grade when I began drawing cartoons on the playground – the girls all wanted me to do a drawing for them – and I very quickly realized that this was a much less painful method of wooing the girls than the athletic competition happening on the jungle gym or the football or baseball fields. Don’t get me wrong I was pretty decent in most sports and played baseball, football, ran track and took Shotokan for several years. But I was never one of the best at any of those things and I always felt that God put me here to be the best at something. Not just one of those guys on the team, there was somewhere that I was supposed to be the captain, the leader, the president and something inside me would settle for nothing less. Of course after high school I have yet to become the president of anything substantial, but I am still searching!
Mr Verge’s teaching style was incredibly refreshing, we actually used to sneak out of other classes by forging notes claiming to be from Mr. Verge and go to his class to work on whatever piece we were working on at the time. How many students do you know that skip school or classes – not to leave school and get into some kind of mischief – but to go to another classroom to work on a project for college entrances and scholarship competitions? Mr. Verge created an atmosphere of comfort and freedom that didn’t exist in most other places. My father didn’t understand the value of that freedom until the end of 11th grade when I began wining competitions worth money! But he eventually came around and became a huge advocate for my career.
It took me almost 25 years to come back home and reconnect with Mr. Verge and many of the students from those days in school. Now I find out that I was only one of many many students that thrived under Mr. Verge’s unique style. Florida’s educational system will have a very large void to fill indeed after he retires from teaching!
Thank you Mr. Verge for giving all of your students over the years such a welcome place of solitude and freedom for all of us to find ourselves. We all owe you a great deal…. http://suncoastpasco.tbo.com/content/2010/may/18/190000/pe-students-frame-a-perfect-ending-for-art-teacher/

Marketing Art
Posted by Shaun McNicholas in Fine Arts, Illustration on November 13, 2009
A few months ago I started researching a location to do an exciting combination of Art, Live Music, Fashion, Photography and Atmosphere. A couple of months earlier I had relocated back to my home town of Tampa Florida after loosing my job in Chicago and the devastating effects of that life change on my lifestyle. My wife and I had discussed moving to a warmer climate several times over the last fifteen years of our marriage, but we never intended or wanted this particular type of situation to drive our change.
Upon my arrival in Tampa my cousin Kim invited me to join her at a meet-up group close to where we live focussed on internet marketing. So I started going and found the experience at TWBAONLINE lead by internet marketing expert and entrepreneur extraordinaire Chris Krimitsos or as others know him King of Video Copy to be an exciting and extremely helpful group of people willing to help other entrepreneurial people in the neighborhood.
After attending several meetings with TWBAONLINE I decided to go for the gusto and launch an art show fully marketed using the techniques I’ve learned from the TWBAONLINE group, some of my own experience, my graphic design skills, my network of friends, family and business associates, and any other technique I can possibly use and implement. After only a month of promoting the event we now have almost 400 people committed to attending and expect more than that in attendance for Novalicious. The event promisses to be an exciting launching point for a series of shows I plan on doing around the Tampa Bay area promoting local artists and entertainers, all friends and associates I believe in and fully support. Their work is of the greatest caliber. Some are well know in their fields and some are rather unknown yet highly talented artists and entertainers.
My intension for these events is to fully utilize internet marketing to promote events in support of the Arts. I believe Art in all of its various forms of expression is the answer to many of our social and economic challenges and provides an avenue of expression that far exceeds conventional written and spoken communications because of the emotional response created through artistic expression and the open discussion and interpretation that occurs when people of different social, economic, gender, political opinions, ethnicities and a host of other differences come together and appreciate expression that has no language and simply exists emotionally within the mind, conscience and heart of the viewer or listener.
As I develop and promote these events I will be examining the effectiveness of internet marketing as compared to traditional print, radio and television advertising and will be comparing the effectiveness of these various promotional techniques in the new economic conditions that we are experiencing today. If my current promotional success is any indication of the effectiveness of social media as a marketing tool I believe the proof of concept will show that embracing social media a a marketing tool for successful events is an avenue everyone should utilize in today’s market.
We all want to have fun socialize, promote our beliefs and convictions, and enjoy a relaxing, exciting and entertaining atmosphere with like minded people. So I am simply in the business of provide this environment for as many people as possible.
If you have an idea or venue you would like to discuss or simply want more information on the events and groups I am involved with you can reach me online at shaunmcnicholas.com Facebook LinkedIn Twitter Youtube Fine Art America or shoot me an email shaun@psmdesign.com and I’ll respond as soon as I can… GO EXPRESS YOURSELF OUT LOUD!!!!!
Art

What is art?
During my first semester of college I almost got into a fist fight with one of the students because when the teacher asked us to do a piece illustrating an idea, I did exactly what he asked me to do as a student and recieved an A on my first classroom assignment, he recieved a C. He accused me of being a sellout and not true to my creative expression.
He was right to a certain degree but it begs and answer to the question. If I design pieces that other people like or want, and I happen to like what I am doing as well, does that make me a sellout? Or just smart?
If you are going to make a living as a painter / illustrator. Other people should probably like what you do. If not then you aren’t in the business of fine art. You are just a painter and your work will never be anything more than a hobby. Fine Art is a business and if you are studying the business of fine art then you are ultimately a sellout by definition because at the end of the day you want people to give you money for your work. You are by definition selling your work and are required to do what other people will pay money to own. You can only hope that LOTS of other people share your taste in art and you will enjoy doing what other people will pay money to own.
What are your thoughts on the subject??

Social Perception
Posted by Shaun McNicholas in Illustration, Uncategorized on October 5, 2009
Consider this: Throughout history we recognize respect and ultimately imitate cultures that last throughout time reflected in their literature, performance and visual arts. In these difficult economic times what better way to express our pride for our lifestyle than through a celebration of those values we hold so dear and fight so hard to protect.
See this and many more pieces like it at the first of a semi annual production being produced by PSM Design. In an effort to educate and promote our community about the Arts and the impact the arts can have on society as an instrument for education, peaceful acceptance and ultimately cultural awareness. Join the blog at PSM Design to receive updates as the event develops and dates and locations become available.

Art Show Extravaganza
Posted by Shaun McNicholas in Illustration on September 29, 2009
I am working on putting together an Art Show for December 4th, 5th and 6th. I am currently looking for a location to host the event that would be conducive to a meeting with 150 people and would have the space for showing 25 to 50 framed original illustrations from myself and a few friends. It will be a fully catered event with live entertainment, drinks, hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction for several of the pieces.
Please join my blog http://www.psmdesign.com to stay informed about location, time and date, and any future announcements or details. This is going to be a HUGE and EXCITING EVENT!
10% of the proceeds raised during this event will be going to support local charities. If you would like to let me know about a charity you personally support please put it in the comments here on this blog and we will investigate the charity to select the best two or three charities who will receive the funds dedicated from this event.
