Marketing Art
Posted by Shaun McNicholas in Fine Arts, Illustration on November 13, 2009
A few months ago I started researching a location to do an exciting combination of Art, Live Music, Fashion, Photography and Atmosphere. A couple of months earlier I had relocated back to my home town of Tampa Florida after loosing my job in Chicago and the devastating effects of that life change on my lifestyle. My wife and I had discussed moving to a warmer climate several times over the last fifteen years of our marriage, but we never intended or wanted this particular type of situation to drive our change.
Upon my arrival in Tampa my cousin Kim invited me to join her at a meet-up group close to where we live focussed on internet marketing. So I started going and found the experience at TWBAONLINE lead by internet marketing expert and entrepreneur extraordinaire Chris Krimitsos or as others know him King of Video Copy to be an exciting and extremely helpful group of people willing to help other entrepreneurial people in the neighborhood.
After attending several meetings with TWBAONLINE I decided to go for the gusto and launch an art show fully marketed using the techniques I’ve learned from the TWBAONLINE group, some of my own experience, my graphic design skills, my network of friends, family and business associates, and any other technique I can possibly use and implement. After only a month of promoting the event we now have almost 400 people committed to attending and expect more than that in attendance for Novalicious. The event promisses to be an exciting launching point for a series of shows I plan on doing around the Tampa Bay area promoting local artists and entertainers, all friends and associates I believe in and fully support. Their work is of the greatest caliber. Some are well know in their fields and some are rather unknown yet highly talented artists and entertainers.
My intension for these events is to fully utilize internet marketing to promote events in support of the Arts. I believe Art in all of its various forms of expression is the answer to many of our social and economic challenges and provides an avenue of expression that far exceeds conventional written and spoken communications because of the emotional response created through artistic expression and the open discussion and interpretation that occurs when people of different social, economic, gender, political opinions, ethnicities and a host of other differences come together and appreciate expression that has no language and simply exists emotionally within the mind, conscience and heart of the viewer or listener.
As I develop and promote these events I will be examining the effectiveness of internet marketing as compared to traditional print, radio and television advertising and will be comparing the effectiveness of these various promotional techniques in the new economic conditions that we are experiencing today. If my current promotional success is any indication of the effectiveness of social media as a marketing tool I believe the proof of concept will show that embracing social media a a marketing tool for successful events is an avenue everyone should utilize in today’s market.
We all want to have fun socialize, promote our beliefs and convictions, and enjoy a relaxing, exciting and entertaining atmosphere with like minded people. So I am simply in the business of provide this environment for as many people as possible.
If you have an idea or venue you would like to discuss or simply want more information on the events and groups I am involved with you can reach me online at shaunmcnicholas.com Facebook LinkedIn Twitter Youtube Fine Art America or shoot me an email shaun@psmdesign.com and I’ll respond as soon as I can… GO EXPRESS YOURSELF OUT LOUD!!!!!
Art

What is art?
During my first semester of college I almost got into a fist fight with one of the students because when the teacher asked us to do a piece illustrating an idea, I did exactly what he asked me to do as a student and recieved an A on my first classroom assignment, he recieved a C. He accused me of being a sellout and not true to my creative expression.
He was right to a certain degree but it begs and answer to the question. If I design pieces that other people like or want, and I happen to like what I am doing as well, does that make me a sellout? Or just smart?
If you are going to make a living as a painter / illustrator. Other people should probably like what you do. If not then you aren’t in the business of fine art. You are just a painter and your work will never be anything more than a hobby. Fine Art is a business and if you are studying the business of fine art then you are ultimately a sellout by definition because at the end of the day you want people to give you money for your work. You are by definition selling your work and are required to do what other people will pay money to own. You can only hope that LOTS of other people share your taste in art and you will enjoy doing what other people will pay money to own.
What are your thoughts on the subject??
I Hate Religious People!
Posted by Shaun McNicholas in Causes, Life Lessons on November 3, 2009
You are sitting in your living room watching a movie enjoying a cup of coffee and relaxing, maybe you are working on a painting, working out, reading a book, organizing all your tools, or balancing your budget, whatever you do to relax. You’ve taken a day off just for yourself to unwind, the kids are at school, your spouse is at work and you’ve just settled in to start “You” time. You get that knock on the door and there in the doorway are two finely dressed individuals, each bearing a leather briefcase and holding a few small brochures or pamphlets in one hand. You know the rest of the exchange if you even open the door.
The problem with this exchange for most of us is the pushy or intrusive experience we’ve all had; whether it happened with a religious person or just a car salesman. We’ve all had some bad experience with an over zealous sales person trying to force you to buy something you really don’t want to buy, or aren’t ready to buy. The salesman comes in many different disguises: men, women, elderly and young; wealthy or poor, beautiful or not. We all have a certain button that when pushed makes us respond to situations with passionate resistance; whether you verbalize your resistance outwardly or not your body language tells the story of your emotional reaction.
On the other hand, we also have a passionate salesman inside each of us that when set in action makes us respond with great passion to situations trying to convince others that our point of view on a subject is right and should be the point of view that all people hold. I find that with most people those who are pushy salespeople also are the most passionate when confronted by another pushy salesperson.
Who are you and what are your buttons?
Please share your stories and oppinions with me I would love to hear any and all of them especially the taboo topics religion, sex, politics, culture, war.
I don’t really hate religious people, I am just very easily annoyed by pushy salespeople, or people with little or no training or sensitivity in etiquette.
Every culture has phrases they use that in some other culture is going to offend people. In many religious circles people say “amen” frequently, call everyone “bro”, hug everyone, say things like “praise the lord” or “Hallelujah”. This is fine in that particular culture but when the words and phrases are used in another cultural setting it can be a very uncomfortable catalyst causing damage in some of the relationships you have. If you are religious and want to share your convictions with everyone around you the first step in getting other people to “want” to hear your opinions is to make it comfortable for people to want to speak with you, want to hear your opinions, and want to share enough time with you for you to share what it is that you feel so strongly about.
I often hear preachers sharing the analogy, if you just discovered the cure for cancer would you keep it to yourself or would you run around sharing your cure with everyone. The problem is that when you’re talking about religion, politics, sex, marriage, war, etc… the “cure” is not such a cut and dry or black and white solution. For some people garlic is the answer for many ailments, for others a trip to the hospital due to a severe allergic reaction. Words are kind of like food, to one person saying “that outfit is FAT” or “that outfit is the BOMB” is a compliment and for others it’s an insult.
My point is this: If you want people to listen to your convictions or buy your products first ask lots of questions and get to know the cultural sensitivities of the person you are trying to share with. The greatest salespeople in the word ask more questions and listen to the people they are trying to sell to more than trying to “push” their products onto an audience who doesn’t want or need them. We all need to work much harder on our sensitivity.
How does this subject apply to sales tactics on the Internet in your opinion?
